Sporting greats toast the PSA Centenary
The blustery and rainy conditions threatened to wage a merciless attack on a cocktail function held in honour of the centenary of the Public Schools' Association of Western Australia. Held within the exclusive grounds of Government House on 8 April, this event was organised by the alumni bodies from the seven PSA schools.
While the conditions caused concern for the organisers, the optimism of the greater than 420 guests shone through and conditions became almost perfect shortly after arrival.
Limited ticket numbers meant only a small cross-section of Guildford's past and present could make up the GGS contingent of 62 which included sporting heroes, staff, coaches, Old Boys and luminaries. GGS sporting greats at the celebration included Graham Gipson (Silver Medal Athletics, 1956 Melbourne Olympics), Geoffrey Hale (Rowing, 1960 Rome Olympics) and Shane Tonkin (Baseball, 1996 Atlanta Olympics).
Old Aquinian, Olympian, former Australian Water Polo Coach, former Hale staff member and guest speaker for the evening, Mr Tom Hoad, proved a tremendous storyteller as he shared his many experiences from his eventful life.
Guests at the event, many of whom faced each other as rivals on the sporting field, now shared a drink as comrades to toast the past one hundred years and to welcome the next.
